Wine Appreciation
Beyond the Chalice
Most of us learned to drink wine before we ever learned to taste it. We know red and white, we know it makes the evening a little warmer and looser, and somewhere along the way we picked up the idea that actually understanding it is for other people. Older people, richer people, people who say things like "notes of leather and pencil shavings" and somehow seem to mean it. This course is for the person who has stood in front of a wall of bottles with no real idea what separates one from the next, and just grabbed whatever had a nice label. You will not become a sommelier here. What you might learn is how to slow down and notice the thing in your glass, where it came from, why it tastes the way it does, and why this particular drink has been sitting at the center of our faith and our tables for thousands of years. Wine is one of the oldest things people have made, and after all, Christ's first miracle was making it well. Perhaps it deserves a little more attention than we tend to give it. Twelve short chapters. No snobbery, just enough to fall in love with it a little.
