Using AI to tailor job applications

What are everyone's thoughts on using AI to tailor your resume for different jobs? On one hand, obviously it's better to tailor it yourself. On the other hand, in this job market, people are having to apply for 100s of jobs to even get an interview. And then, there's the part where the HR teams are also using AI themselves to filter people out if they don't fit their exact keywords.

What is one to do?

It is definitely a catch 22, I would say if you are mass applying then use AI. If you have narrowed your search to say 10 jobs then do it personally. Honestly the resume is just to get your chance at an interview then you sale yourself to them. Good luck on your search, it is rough out there. Prayers for your success.

Usually the jobs you're applying for are the same function/area and you can already tailor it to that yourself. Then I'd say use AI if you're applying for a lot of jobs that you don't really care about, but do it yourself for the jobs you really want the most. Also, give AI instructions to do it in a style that fits you and the kind of jobs you're applying for, so you avoid getting the "usual" AI stuff as much as possible.

I personnaly wouldn't, but conversely you can use it to your advantage, by asking it to rate, compare and look for errors in your resume. I think it's of better use this way. Good luck!

I'd say there's smart ways of using it. I have a workflow that uses a bunch of md files with factual data about my experience, education, past projects, etc. Then I use an agent harness that tailors a draft cv from the job posting url and defines a specific angle. For example, you can mention a specific skillset that's relevant to the industry, highlight some hard skills but leave others as secondary, etc. from there I review the draft and improve the style and tone instructions for future applications. When I'm happy with the draft it I run a command so it generates a PDF that's friendly to ATS systems. It also logs everything in a database so I can review all the skills I don't yet have so I can see trends and prioritize those. It's working well, not perfect but I'm getting 2-3 solid applications per day, which is better than mass applying imo.

Yes I’ve realise that the ATS problem is very tricky because I used to make very “pretty” CVs and apparently that can cause errors!

When Jesus speaks of the rich, He says not to compare yourself to them. When he talks about pagans, He says not to pray like them. I think the safe thing, until you fully understand the moral implications, is to stear clear.

That being said, my impression of AI in general is that it is a tool as long as you do not give it too much power. Whatever AI does for you, it should be the final touches. There should always be a human touch after the AI. Every resume and cover letter that is made using AI should feel as though it is written by a human person whether that person is you or someone you hire.
