Do the Inner Work First

Nobody wants to hear this before they start looking. But it is the most important article in this series, so here it is.

You are probably not as ready as you think you are. Not because you are a bad person or not worth loving - but because most of us arrive at Catholic dating carrying wounds we have not named yet, patterns we have not noticed yet, and a gap between what we say we want and what we are actually drawn to.

This is worth paying attention to before you invest in someone else.

**Attachment and what it does to your search**

The way you attached to your earliest caregivers shapes, more than almost anything else, how you behave in close relationships. If you grew up in an environment where love was conditional or unpredictable, you may find yourself drawn to people who are emotionally unavailable - and faintly bored by people who are steady and kind. Not because steady and kind is wrong. Because it doesn't feel familiar.

This is not a diagnosis. It is a pattern worth examining. If you find yourself consistently attracted to people who are difficult, or consistently uninterested in people who are genuinely good - that is information. Take it seriously.

**The gap between what you want and what you're ready for**

Most people can articulate what they want in a spouse far more clearly than they can articulate who they actually are right now. Which is fine - the gap is normal. But it becomes a problem when you pursue someone at a level of depth and commitment you are not yet capable of sustaining.

Be honest about where you are. Not where you intend to be in two years. Where you are today. Someone can be right for you in theory and wrong for you in timing. Knowing the difference is part of the inner work.

**Spiritual direction as a dating tool**

This is underused and undersold. A good spiritual director is not a therapist - but a good spiritual director who knows you well can see your blind spots with a clarity that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere. If you are seriously discerning marriage, having someone in your corner who knows your spiritual life, your patterns, and your history is not a luxury. It is close to essential.

The work you do on yourself before you find the right person is not wasted time. It is the thing that makes you capable of recognising them when they arrive - and being someone worth arriving for.
