Catholics in Germany putting politics above the Church

I‘ve met many Germans who consider themselves Catholic, and yet support abortion, lgbt, want a female pope, etc. This includes people who go to, or even work at my local church regularly. Even the „Katholische Religionslehre“ teacher at my Gymnasium seems to put personal political beliefs above church teachings, even when they contradict even the least debatable of beliefs. Is it just me being unlucky, or does someone else also have a similar experience?
