SSPX Excommuncations

Now that the consecration have taken place and the penalties have been implemented by the Holy See, what is the way forward for the SSPX? Will we see another decades long cold war between them and the Vatican? Or will this act spur both sides to enter into negotiations with a renewed sense of urgency to end this schism?

I don't think unity between the Vatican and the SSPX will come soon. The discussion wasn't helpful before, and now there's just more hurt on both sides. Plus of course the SSPX itself doesn't recognise the schism.
Tomorrow Fr. Pagliarani will publish a response to the Vatican's excommunication, so we will see what the tone of that will be, though I think it'll be similar to earlier messages.

But really, for actual unity, the issues on Vatican II will have to be addressed - the NO, religious freedom, ecumenical activities, collegiality, etc. I feel like the Vatican didn't give that much of an answer to explain how it's in line with earlier church teaching.

But what is all about? Why are they separated themselves from the Vatican?

The main problem is that they don't agree with everything in the Second Vatican Council. They acknowledge that the council itself was a valid council, but that some things that were said in the council, oppose the Tradition (what the Church has taught for over 1900 years before). And of course, even the Magisterium can't oppose Tradition.

After that, basically the Vatican hasn't given an explanation of the points that seem to oppose Tradition, at least not all of them. And there have been things that popes have said or even written in encyclicals that go against Tradition too. Discussion between the Vatican and SSPX weren't fruitful, so it's a schism now.

(Also, the SSPX says there's an emergency situation in the Church, which would allow the consecrations without papal mandate)

@misericordia thanks for everything! It is more clear 🙏

@luca you're welcome! I attend the SSPX occasionally, so I wanted to make sure I know what it's about. There's actually a lot of wrong or incomplete info in the media I saw
