On the topic on Pope Leo’s recent tweet… I was amused by some Catholic artists who were whining about AI taking artists jobs away, but looking at their art, frankly speaking I don’t think they had any jobs to begin with.
A critical take perhaps, but I think a lot of Catholic “artists” aren’t very good. I surf, but I don’t call myself a surfer because I’m not very good… but some people just really want to put a label on themselves perhaps.
But that said.
I’d rather see mediocre art that is a human artist’s best work, than AI generated slop.
We can be objective about the beauty we see, while also recognizing that part of the beauty is that it was created by a human.
I think it’s quite something that even if AI can create objectively beautiful looking images, people with discernment can always still tell that there’s something off or missing.
The sad thing is that I believe some people, through no fault of their own, can’t tell AI art from real art. And that’s not a criticism on them, because we all have different strengths and weaknesses.
Do you know any creators who regularly use AI images in their content?

But can we actually be objective about the beauty we see? I have seen terrible works of art (from my point of view) that were like a revelation to someone else. Some people are touched by the authenticity of something not being ‘very good’ whilst others are touched by technique, time, precision, the use of golden ratios.. i think ai doesnt allow for the development of an emerging artist because it misses the process that one has in order to become the best possible artist, but the process that might seem mediocre to some, might be loved by others
